You are not the outlier

The US survey that measures HSV antibodies in the general population covers ages 14 to 49, which is why "50 and over" statistics are so hard to find. What it does show is prevalence climbing with every age band it covers.

An older national survey fills in part of the edge: the 1988 to 1994 survey of everyone aged 12 and older found HSV-2 antibodies in 21.9% of the population and listed older age as an independent predictor of having them (Fleming and colleagues, 1997), with fewer than one in ten of those people ever told they had genital herpes. And reporting on CDC surveillance data, NBC News described rates of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis among Americans aged 55 and older more than doubling between 2012 and 2022 (NBC News, March 27, 2024, reporting CDC AtlasPlus surveillance data). Those are different infections and second-hand figures, but they say something about how many people over 55 have new partners.

Three ways it lands after 50

The diagnosis is old and the disclosure is new. You were diagnosed at 24, married at 30, and have not said the word to a partner since; the marriage ended or your spouse died, and the next first date is also your first disclosure in decades. The facts have changed since you learned them, so read the transmission numbers before the date, because the version in your head is probably from a 1990s pamphlet.

The diagnosis is new and so is everything else. A first outbreak at 58 after a long relationship ends raises the question of where it came from, which often cannot be answered, because most infections are silent for years and antibody tests cannot date one. What changes medically after 50

Shingles is not herpes. It is caused by varicella-zoster, the chickenpox virus, and the CDC recommends two doses of the recombinant zoster vaccine for adults 50 and older (CDC, reviewed January 17, 2025). Get it on its own merits; it does nothing for HSV, and your HSV is no reason to skip it.

Kidneys decide your antiviral dose. Valacyclovir is cleared by the kidneys, and its label (revised February 2026) says elderly patients are more likely to have reduced renal function and to require dose reduction, and more likely to have kidney or nervous-system side effects; the daily suppressive dose drops once creatinine clearance falls below 30 mL/min. The trials behind the label included 906 people aged 65 and over and 352 aged 75 and over. Tell whoever prescribes it your kidney numbers and every other medication you take.

Long-standing infections tend to be quieter: the CDC notes recurrences diminish over time for many people and that asymptomatic shedding is most frequent in the first year. Quieter is not silent, and a decades-old infection can still transmit. Sores also heal more slowly on older skin, so wait out an outbreak fully; between outbreaks, nothing changes.

Disclosure with decades of history

The mechanics are the same at any age: before sexual contact, calm, brief, with your actual plan. Three things are easier after 50. Your partner probably has HSV-1 already, since 59.7% of the 40 to 49 band carried it, most from childhood cold sores. People your age have had health conversations before, so herpes fits alongside blood pressure pills or a knee rather than being the only medical thing either of you has said out loud. And you know what you want, so a calm disclosure at 60 tends to get a calm answer.

One thing is harder: the temptation to skip the conversation on the theory that "we're too old for this to matter". It is less likely, not impossible, and the ethics do not age out. One step the CDC recommends is that the partner without a diagnosis can be offered type-specific testing; do not assume it comes back negative, because 21.2% of that age band carried HSV-2 antibodies and most had never been told. A positive blood test in someone with no symptoms should be confirmed by a second method before either of you acts on it, which the both-partners guide explains.

Where people over 50 actually meet

Pew surveyed 6,034 US adults in July 5 to 17, 2022 and found 20% of those aged 50 to 64 and 13% of those 65 and older had ever used a dating site or app, against 53% of adults under 30 (published February 2, 2023). Users over 50 were more than four times as likely to have used Match as Tinder (50% against 11%). The pool exists; it sits on different apps from the ones your children use.

On the HSV-specific side, what we can report is what we saw on September 15, 2026: the first 20 profiles in one U.S. state's default feed were aged 47 to 70. That feed is shaped by the viewing account's location and age, and ours is itself in its fifties, so read it as a sample, not a census. The platform's over-50 landing page claims "thousands of active members over 50", which is the company's own figure and we could not verify it. A status-listed platform means the first date does not open with a disclosure; a mainstream app aimed at older daters gives a bigger pool and one conversation to prepare. Many people run both.
