Thirteen of every hundred people aged 15 to 49, about 520 million people, carry HSV-2. That is a population figure, not anyone's personal risk; the transmission guide has the numbers from actual couples, with their limits.

WHO estimates that 520 million people aged 15 to 49 worldwide had HSV-2 in 2020, about 13% of that age group. The other 87% is the remainder of that rounded estimate.

This measures HSV-2 infection. It does not measure all genital herpes, how many people have symptoms, or how many people use a dating site. The dots illustrate a population estimate; they are not individual study participants.

There are rooms full of people who already know.

The American Sexual Health Association lists local herpes support groups by state and points people to Meetup for more. PositiveSingles runs member blogs, an anonymous questions board, and real-world meetups, coffee, a trail walk, dinner, all active when we looked on September 15, 2026.
